# What’s the Difference Between Comprehensive and Collision Auto Coverage?

## **What Is Comprehensive Coverage?**

Comprehensive covers damage caused by something other than a car accident. A good
way to remember it: if it’s _not a collision_, it’s probably comprehensive.

Situations typically covered include:

 * Hail damage (a big issue across North Texas)
 * Theft or break-ins
 * Vandalism
 * Fire
 * Flood or water damage
 * Falling objects (tree limbs, roofing, etc.)
 * Animal collisions (like hitting a deer or coyote)

**Example:**** You’re parked at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco when a sudden hailstorm
dents your hood and roof. Your comprehensive policy pays for repairs after your
deductible.

Or maybe someone smashes your window in downtown Plano and steals your laptop bag.
That’s comprehensive, too.

---

## **What Is Collision Coverage?**

Collision coverage pays for repairs when your car is damaged in a collision or an
accident,  This coverage applies no matter who’s at fault.

It typically applies when:

 * You hit another vehicle
 * Another car hits you
 * You crash into a fence, pole, or guardrail
 * You flip your car without another vehicle involved

**Example:****If you are driving in a rain storm through a slick McKinney intersection,
you rear-end the car ahead of you. Collision coverage pays for your vehicle’s repairs(
minus your deductible). Your Liability coverage will pay for the other vehicle,
but your Collison will pay to repair your vehicle after your deductible has been
met.

Or, say you misjudge a turn and clip a curb in Richardson. Collision has you covered.

---

## **The Key Difference**

 * **Comprehensive:** Non-collision events (hail, theft, fire, deer, etc.)
 * **Collision:** Crashes or accidents where your car strikes something

Both require a deductible, usually $500 or $1,000, (but could be $1500 or $2000
based on your policy coverages) and both pay based on your car’s current value at
the time of the claim.

---

## **Do You Need Both?**

It depends on a few factors:

 * Your car’s age and value (Is it worth the money for the value in the vehicle?
 * Whether you’re still financing or leasing (Finance companies do require Comp
   and Collision typically)
 * Your comfort with financial risk  (Can you afford to not have a down payment
   on a new vehicle?)

**You probably want both if:**

 * Your vehicle is newer (under 8–10 years old)
 * You’re making payments or leasing
 * Replacing the car on your own would strain your budget

**You might skip one or both if:**

 * The car is older, paid off, and worth under $3,000–$5,000
 * You’re comfortable covering the cost of a replacement yourself

At The Sterling Insurance Group, we help drivers run the math so they don’t over-
insure or leave themselves vulnerable. Call us today to discuss your options!

## **What Do These Coverages Cost in North Texas?**

Rates vary based on:

 * Your car’s make, model, and age
 * Driving record
 * Your zip code (yes, rates differ between Plano, McKinney, and Prosper)
 * Deductible amount

**Local insight:** Hail risk pushes comprehensive rates higher in Dallas suburbs.
Collision costs more for younger drivers or those with past accidents. Adding both
increases your monthly premium but can save thousands if your vehicle is totaled.

---

## **What If You Hit an Animal?**

This one confuses a lot of Texas drivers.

 * Hitting an animal = Comprehensive
 * Swerving to avoid it and crashing into a tree = Collision

Example: You’re driving near Celina when a deer runs out and you can’t avoid it,
in this situation, comprehensive pays. If you swerve and wreck into a fence, that’s
collision.

---

## **Can You Choose Different Deductibles?**

Yes. Many drivers do.

 * Lower deductible for comprehensive (hail is common)
 * Higher deductible for collision (accidents happen less often but cost more)

This lets you balance affordability and protection.

---

## **What If Your Car Is Totaled?**

Both coverages pay the **actual cash value (ACV)** of your car if it’s totaled.
This is important. A vehicle is not paid at replacement cost, it is paid at the
actual cash value of the vehicle.  If you still owe more than the car is worth,
gap insurance can cover that difference.

---

## **What If Another Driver Hits You?**

If they’re clearly at fault, their liability insurance should pay. But in cases
where they’re uninsured, underinsured, or fault is disputed, using your collision
coverage can get you back on the road faster. Your insurer can then go after the
other party for reimbursement. If you wonder which should apply for your situation,
give us a call and we are happy to help walk you through it.

---

## **Final Takeaway**

Comprehensive and collision work hand-in-hand to protect your car against the unexpected.
Skipping one might save money each month but could cost far more later.

At The Sterling Insurance Group, we help drivers in Plano, McKinney, Allen, Richardson,
Prosper, and Celina understand their options and choose coverage that actually fits
their lives, not just a cookie-cutter policy.
