Prioritizing Your Health: Reminders for Every Woman
Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the United States — but when detected early, survival rates increase dramatically. Awareness starts with small, consistent habits that can have a lifelong impact:
- Schedule regular screenings. Talk with your healthcare provider about when to begin mammograms. For many women, annual screenings starting at age 40 are recommended.
- Know your normal. Perform monthly self-exams and pay attention to any changes — such as lumps, swelling, skin texture, or nipple discharge. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait to get it checked.
- Adopt healthy habits. A balanced diet, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol can all reduce risk.
- Understand your family history. Share your family’s medical background with your doctor. Genetic testing and earlier screening may be beneficial for some women.
